Reading classes

Are you chasing a university degree but have not secured a place?

As a current Head Teacher and Educational Adviser and writer I have followed with great interest and equal dismay the increasing number of students unable to obtain a place at university to follow the standard path towards a degree.

Please be aware that there are alternative routes towards that degree.

One major route is via an HND at a college close to home, one such college (and here I declare my interest as an Adviser to the college) is Queensland College London, with colleges in both Acton and Reading, offering a variety of courses leading to the award of HND which can then be 'topped up' with a one year course to deliver a degree. This can be done with a number of in built advantages, not the least of which are financial.

Please see www.qcol.co.uk

• The student can remain at home whilst studying, thus keeping costs down to a minimum
• Greater opportunity to gain part time work whilst studying, especially in an area known to the student
• Less homesick students when home/private lives are not affected (numbers of students leaving courses through a variety of difficulties in first year of courses are on the increase.
• Little chance of lifting the student loan to frightening proportions
• Practical as well as theoretical experience gained throughout the course

This may not be the ideal route towards degree success for everyone, but, as recent coverage underlines, we live in an uncertain and far from ideal educational world. I wonder how many young students may wish to consider such alternatives around the country via a local further education college such as Queensland College London.
